Louise Simmons, County Junior Organiser, updated the County at the recent AGM about the success of the Junior Section in 2019, which has seen the section grow significantly due to her own enjoyment and her emphasis on fun in the game! Her achievement of seeing the Junior Team triumph at Junior County Match Week for the first time in 10 years, was a milestone and she thanks the team of: Chloe Burden, Ellen Nicholas, Salysa Mason, Anna Wills, Katie Field, Gudrun Nolan, Lille-beau Thorpe, Yasmin Hang and Maisie Hassall.
Earlier in the year, Lil Cummings at Cowdray Golf organised the Junior Fundraiser which saw players, parents and others raise over £1700. This money goes towards the coaching, so valued by the girls and the county – thank you to everyone who contributed prizes or donations.
Girls Golf Rocks took place at Cottesmore, Dale Hill, Haywards Heath, Rustington Golf and Slinfold. Many youngsters aged between 5-15 participated in the taster sessions and have carried on with the game. This initiative (funded by England Golf) is being run again in 2020 and more Sussex clubs are being encouraged to apply for this program – details are available here.
Louise is mindful of the work provided by the Junior Committee of Christine Knight, Julie Field, Megan Edwards, Fenella Buss and Sandra Holman who have all been terrific support. However, it’s Coach Rob Chruszcz from Rustington who has provided expert tuition to the Juniors and been key in their success. The Junior Captain for 2020 is Katie Field from Bognor – good luck to her in this important year.
Louise reminds us all that the future of the County is dependent on the Juniors and if anyone knows of a youngster who’d like to learn more about the game, how to get into a club, the training schemes on offer, then they or their parents should speak to Louise Simmons.
