On Tuesday 27th July the Sussex 2nd Team played their next match in the Stovold Trophy, hosting Hampshire at The Dyke Golf Club.

The golf course was in excellent condition, but the weather for the morning Foursomes games was not what we hoped for in late July – threatening grey skies; cool and breezy with the promise of rain on the horizon!

Hampshire had sent a very strong team and despite some solid play from the Sussex pairings of Holly Crompton & Delyth Roberts; Tracy Poulsom & Maisie Hassall and Rosie Hockey & Alison Vans Agnew, the team ended the session 3-0 down after some keenly contested individual games.

Worryingly as the teams enjoyed an excellent lunch, the weather closed in, resulting in the team captains hastily checking the competition rules, in case the singles play was not going to be possible. Luckily the wind got stronger, the rain stopped and the clouds lifted to allow Sussex to set off in determined fashion for the afternoon singles play.

Slowly but surely the morning deficit was extinguished with wins for Holly; Delyth & Alison. It was getting extremely tense in the remaining matches. Maisie who was playing in her first 2nd Team match secured an excellent win on the 18th against an experienced Hampshire player. What a memorable debut for the 2nd Team, well played Maisie.

Although Sussex won the afternoon singles session 4 games to 2, the team narrowly lost the overall match 4-5 with the deciding game going to the 17th hole. All the games saw some excellent golf being played by both teams, enjoyed by the team managers and Pat Johns the County Captain.
